The author analyses five coins and a weight that are a part of a hoard discovered at Alcedar, Şoldăneşti district, Republic of Moldova, in the autumn of 2008. There are three Byzantine issues — miliarensia — minted by the Emperor Ioan Tzimiskes (969—976) at Constantinople, a cufic dirham issued by the Buyid dynasty in 349 А. H. (960—961 A. D.) in Ram Hurmuz, Khuzistan province, in the name of the rulers Rukn ad-Dawla, Mu’izz ad-Dawla and the caliph al-Muti, and an imitation of a cufic dirham of unknown prototype. The weight is made of iron, covered with a copper layer, and weighs 31.2 g. The Islamic coins of alcedar hoard represent the latest penetration of the cufic
emissions into the Prut-Dniester area, and the hoard can be dated by 970-980. |
