All psychological interventions rely on the power of language. Even those that emphasize silence use imagery, induce hypnosis, or use exercises to promote direct contact with the present place and time, and do so using language processes. Psychotherapists rarely intervene directly in the lives of their patients. They largely create change through conversation. Effective therapists, by nature and training, are skilled at using language (speaking clearly, listening attentively and understanding) and promoting psychological well-being through dialogue. Language builds alliance, provokes deep understanding and expresses empathy. It teaches concepts, shapes new skills, and guides therapeutic exercises. Language is not just a vehicle for therapeutic intervention, it is the intervention.
