The powers of the President of the Republic of Moldova include issuing decrees for the registration in the General Armorial of the Republic of Moldova of certain categories of public insignia. Of these, territorial symbols have a greater resonance in society and arouse increased interest compared to corporate or private ones. Taking over the Presidency on December 24, 2020, Maia Sandu continued the work of her predecessors in terms of formalizing the territorial coats of arms and flags, issuing several decrees in this regard. Thus, in 2021, the coats of arms and flags of the following territorial units were registered: Tigheci village (Tigheci commune, Leova district, Decree no. 31-IX of February 11), Nemțeni village (Nisporeni district, Decree no. 66-IX of April 5), Iargara town and Meșeni component village (Leova district, Decree no. 109-IX of June 7), Burlacu commune and Burlacu and Spicoasa component villages (Cahul district, Decree no. 113-IX of June 10), Zăluceni village (Florești district, Decree no. 126-IX of July 22), Sofia village (Drochia district, Decree no. 199-IX of October 19), Căinarii Vechi village (Căinarii Vechi commune, Soroca district, Decree no. 200-IX of October 19), Taraclia district (Decree no. 241-IX of November 22), Slobozia village (Ștefan-Vodă district, Decree no. 270-IX of December 13) and Talmaza village (Ștefan-Vodă district, Decree no. 290-IX of December 22). Reviewing the dominant ideas embodied in the recently registered symbols, one can see an emblematic appeal to local history, real or legendary, and a clear reference to the natural environment and economic occupations. The procedure of canting arms is explicitly used only in the case of Spicoasa village, in other cases the symbolization of the name being made in more “subtle” ways. In the case of Tigheci village, a heraldic project was revived, with reference to the wood Codrii Tigheciului, elaborated in 1918 by the illustrious heraldist Paul Gore for Cahul County, which then only separated from Ismail County and was supposed to be named in the honor of the old Moldavian land – Tigheci county. This recovery not only restores a valuable mark, but also gives today’s village the honor of perpetuating the glory of a legendary land that has disappeared. From the point of view of enriching the national repertoire of heraldic charges, the village of Zăluceni stands out, in the emblem of which, for the first time in Romanian heraldry, a field covered with a fishing net and dotted with flowers of Allium ampeloprasum is presented. In the coat of arms of the village of Talmaza, a division of the shield, rare for world heraldry, is used: it is beveled on the left with the head of a shepherd dog. On the arms of the town of Iargara and the village of Meșeni, a red oak is depicted, and on the arms of the village of Nemțeni – a catfish, both charges are little used. A peacock is represented in the coat of arms of the village of Slobozia, with the preservation of the traditional Romanian heraldic symbolism of this bird. Finally, it should be noted the use of heraldic crosses with different symbolic load in the four coats of arms: flory (Spicoasa), patty (Meșeni), rayonnant Latin (Nemțeni), crosslet (Zăluceni). Among the flags, from a conceptual and artistic point of view, the one of Zăluceni stands out, on which a purple narrowed inner border is used to provide semantic support for the central charge. The red fesses accompanying the black rail winged wheel add a special elegance to the flag of the town of Iargara. The flags of the Meșeni and Spicoasa villages represent an elegant similar structure, dictated by the vexillological custom. In the flag of Talmaza village, a composition is made in accordance with the division and the charges in the coat of arms, but the vexillological solution appears as a completely original one. |
