Rezumat | ||||||
Referendums are popular with the public as they are seen as a fair way of resolving difficult or significant decisions. Where there are effective public education campaigns referendums can create high levels of support for significant changes to the way we are governed. They create a public space for political discourse about important issues so that once the referendum is concluded there is often a degree of consensus about the outcome. Referendums should be held at the same time as other elections so as to reduce their costs and to encourage turnout. There is substantial experience worldwide of holding referendums at the same time as other referendums and there is no reason to think that that creates unnecessary confusion. |
