Rezumat

The paper intends to present some defining aspects of the origin and the classification of names and surnames. A family name is typically a part of a person's name which has been passed, according to law or custom, from one or both parents to their children. The use of family names is common in many cultures around the world. Each culture has its own rules as to how these names are applied and used. Name etymologists classify European surnames under five categories, depending on their origin: given name, occupational name, location name, nickname, and ornamental name. One of the things that all people and places have in common is names. Nobody ever would have thought that so much information could be derived about a culture simply by looking at their names.
