Rezumat

This year we mark the 190th anniversary of the birth of architect Leopold Sheidevandt and the 125th anniversary of his death. Being of noble origin and Catholic religion, he was court counselor and civil engineer of the Bessarabian Chamber of State Property. Born in 1829, L. Sheidevandt graduated from the Engineering and Topographic Department of the Forest and Land Institute and was appointed to the post of Kishinev city architect in 1878, replacing another famous architect A. I. Bernardazzi, who left for Odessa. According to the certificate of service, he conscientiously approached his duties. In the period from 1852 to 1869, he built many new churches in Akkerman and Bendery districts of Bessarabia, several buildings in the Kishinev Botanical Garden and others. He also dealt with the detailed transference of state-owned villages on the plan. Leopold Sheidevandt supported Karl Schmidt, Kishinev city mayor, regarding the possible construction of the theater building, emphasizing that the theater should meet all modern needs and expressed his opinion about such basic issues as fire safety measures, heating and ventilation. The architect believed that if a little velvet, gold and drapery were used in the design of the theater building, the audience would be able to appreciate “the most refined taste”. This is evidenced by the documents of the National Archive of the Republic of Moldova. The designs for the construction of residential buildings in Kishinev, completed by L. Sheidevandt in 1883-1884, are also preserved. As for the architect’s personal documents, related to his marriage, the birth of his children, as well as death, are preserved in the metric books of the Kishinev Catholic Church. Sheidevandt was married to Adelaide, the daughter of another Kishinev Architect, Joseph Gasket, and they had eight children. He died in 1894 and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Chisinau, successfully fulfilling architectural duties in Bessarabia for over 40 years.
