Rezumat

Exploring the narrative by Mark Shtemberg, M. D., we apply the innovative phenomenological approach developed by us: “elements of the world image formed by the narrator’s mythological consciousness” (EWI) are revealed, comprehended, and correlated with ethnocultural “Besht’s constants”. Shtemberg makes it clear that he found it crucial to follow the path of an obstetrician-gynecologist instead of that of a dermatovenerologist (though that specialty was very attractive to him and guaranteed career progress). We explore the EWI stating, “The Universe is such that it is extremely important to identify one’s own path in life, those individual meanings that are exactly up to ‘me’ to fulfill”. To comprehend it, we apply the phenomenological concept developed by V. Frankl, the creator of logotherapy, who regards the “noological dimension” as the “anthropological” one. According to V. Frankl, man’s intuitive ability to “find unique meanings” to be implemented namely by him has an absolute importance; it is implied that “it is always up to man to decide whether or not he wishes to implement that meaning”. A similar idea can be found in J. Ortega y Gasset’s concept of “vocation” and in M. Buber’s rendering of the parable by Kafka. M. Buber states that Kafka made a “contribution to the metaphysics of the ‚door’”. The protagonist, obeying the guardian’s prohibition, does not enter the “open gateway which leads to the world of meaning”. At the moment of his death, it turns out that the gateway was intended only for him, and it is currently closing. M. Shtemberg’s own concept of the situation – including the motto he finds to reflect the essence of the profession, “Wisdom, courage, and mercy,” – correlates to the concept by V. Frankl. Choosing the profession of obstetrician-gynecologist is the implementation of the “unique meaning” “required” from the young narrator. The EWI enriches the content of Besht’s constant concept of “metaphysics of an act”.
