Într-un stat modern, cu instituţii publice viabile, mass-media este concepută un instrument vital al democraţiei, un suport şi un stimulator activ al realităţii în desfăşurare. Presa este putere prin informaţia difuzată. În ce relaţie se află instituţiile mediatice cu parlamentul, guvernul, magistratura? Cum îşi justifică presa calificativul de „putere a patra” în societăţile contemporane, în general, şi în Republica Moldova, în particular? Se consideră că puterea ajută presa în măsura în care o poate controla. Este această afirmaţie o axiomă sau o deviere de la normalitate? Presa este partenera celorlalte trei puteri, - legislativă, executivă şi judecătorească, sau este servitoarea lor? Pe marginea acestor şi altor supoziţii se pronunţă autorii în articolul ce urmează.

In a modern state, with viable public institutions, the media is seen as a vital instrument of democracy, an active support and stimulator of the ongoing reality. The press may be considered powerful through the information disseminated. What kinds of relations have media institutions with the parliament, the government, the judiciary system? How does the press justify the qualification of "fourth power" in the contemporary societies, in general, and in the Republic of Moldova, in particular. The state power is considered that it helps the press as much as it can control it. Is this statement an axiom or a deviation from normality? May be considered the press the partner of the other three powers - legislative, executive and judicial, or is it their servant only?
