Rezumat

This is a study which aims to demonstrate that lexical mobility from other languages and cultures towards Romanian has also been active since the fall of the Iron Curtain. French, the Slavic languages, Hungarian, Turkish and, German, to a much lesser extent, were the traditional donor languages before the 20th century. The 20th century and the first half of the 21st century appear to have been more embracing and welcoming to words coming from other languages as well. Our research was mainly intended to identify the foreign languages whose words have been admitted by the Romanian vocabulary; they include not only English and Arabic but also Korean and Japanese words. The second aim was to ascertain the presence and the expansion of English eponyms within the same linguistic framework. This is consequential to a few more surveys demonstrating the productivity of personal names which may sometimes be used as common words. That lexical mobility has improved consistently during the last hundred years is due not only to the progress of sciences, technology and the peoples’ possibility to travel all over the planet but also to the coming into being of the World Wide Web, with all its communication facilities.
