The Catholic Church was directly involved in the spiritual and educational growth of the Catholic population in Romania, and from this perspective, the “St. Joseph” Franciscan Province had an important role to play. Particular importance was given to the charity and social works carried out by the Conventual Franciscan Brethren in Moldova. The establishment and functioning of the Hălăuceşti Orphanage represents such a charitable activity carried out by the Church through the Franciscan Order in Romania. The establishment of the Catholic orphanage in Hălăuceşti was an important part of the efforts made in this respect at national level. The idea of setting up an orphanage, hospital or asylum in Hălăuceşti belonged to Provincial U. Cipolloni, who in 1914 called for this, but the project was delayed due to the lack of funds. In 1915, the parish of Hălăuceşti called on Polish nun Elena Terlifoj, who started the charitable work of care for the sick and war wounded in the village.
