The occupation of Bessarabia by the USSR in the summer of 1940 was a landmark for the beginning of a new era of the history of local Orthodox Church. The Soviet atheistic state perceived the church and the clergy both as an enemy and as an obstacle on its way toward gaining absolute control over Bessarabian society. The regime intended to cleanse the society of all its members considered to be hostile or dangerous. Numerous priests were arrested, imprisoned and executed, but not all of the killings were perpetrated by the secret police officers. Some of the priests became martyrs of the Orthodox faith being killed by the pro-Communist activists or dying in harsh conditions of the exile. The present article analyzes the cases of the Bessarabian martyred Orthodox Christian priests, who died during the first Soviet occupation of the province under various circumstances because of the policies promoted by the soviet regime. |
