Rezumat

The US was the only great victorious power in the First World War that refused to sign the International Treaty for the Recognition of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania of 28 October 1920 in Paris. While the causes of this decision need to be sought in the geopolitical rationale of the Washington administration, we were not able to identify even a single US document where the diplomats would differentiate between Romanians and „Moldovans”. Despite the fact that the entire diplomatic correspondence (that we had access to) from the inter-war period of the American embassies from various capitals of Europe confirms the fact that the US opinion was that Bessarabia was mostly inhabited by ethnic Romanians, the Americans refused to reconsider their position throughout the interwar period, although they did not ignore the evolution of the Bessarabian problem in the aforementioned period of time. The US Department of State was aware of the politico-diplomatic situation as well as of its military aspects and implications through reports from embassies and representations from various European capitals. In addition, the US government was well-informed about the situation in Bessarabia by US diplomats and military attachés travelling throughout Romania. These reports must have had their share of influence on the evolution of the attitude of the Americans towards the Bessarabian problem. For these reasons, we undertook the effort to highlight the attitude of the Americans towards the social and economic realities of inter-war Bessarabia and, as a result, to point out how these impressions influenced the US position on the international status of Bessarabia.
