Rezumat

Fuel cells based on methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) are concern as an alternative to combustion engines for a variety of applications due to their easy transportation, handling, storage, low operating temperatures and higher energy density compared to the hydrogen. Platinum is the most common catalyst for methanol oxidation, but it is very sensitive to the reaction intermediates such as CO and due to the CO poisoning losses its activity.  Accordingly, the search of more active and less expensive catalysts with great stability for the methanol oxidation reaction has resulted in the development of new non-platinum binary and ternary catalysts. In this work alloys were obtained from the citrate-borate bath having different compositions of Co-3W, Co-15W and Co-30W (in at.%) and further tested as anode materials for methanol oxidation.  A well-defined crystalline structure was indicated for the Co-3W and Co-15W coatings. Whereas the high content of W in the alloy ( 30 at.%) caused the formation of nanocrystalline structure (“amorphous-like”) and the morphology became more compact, a spherical cluster surface consisted from large number of smaller size nodular-shape grains. The electro-catalytic activity of prepared Co-W alloys was examined by means of cyclic voltammetry in the mixture of 1 M CH3OH and 0.1 M H2SO4. It was found that the rate of methanol electro-oxidation depends on the content of W in the alloy, and amorphous as-deposited Co-30 at.% W alloy is more effective electrode for methanol oxidation in tested mixture than pure Pt (see Fig. 1a). Whereas the crystalline as-deposited Co-3W and Co-18W alloys were wholly inactive for methanol oxidation, because the electrochemical alloy dissolution occurs in the tested media (Fig. 1. (b)). Acknowledgement. The authors acknowledge funding from the Research Council of Lithuania (MIP-031/2014) and Moldavian national project 15.817.02.05A.
