Rezumat | |
Anthocyanin content and composition of red autumn leaves of six Vitis vinifera L. cultivars for table grapes native to Romania was evaluated in order to identify new sustainable sources of vegetal pigments for food and pharmaceutical industries. Picked between two to eight weeks after grape harvest, red vine leaves showed an anthocyanin content ranging from 109.09 mg∙100 g-1 f.w. to 348.40 mg∙100 g-1 f.w., highly correlated with leaf total phenolic content (R2=0.7801). HPLC analysis revealed the presence of nine anthocyanins (similar to grape profile), with forms 3-O-glucoside of peonidin and malvidin as main representatives. Compared to green leaves, red senescence leaves showed a significantly higher antioxidant activity (% scavenged DPPH), directly correlated with the presence of anthocyanins and phenolic compounds. Total chlorophyll and carotenoid content in red leaves was very low, without exceeding 0.75±0.02 mg∙g-1 and 0.30±0.01 mg∙g-1, respectively. Since anthocyanins are considered responsible for various health benefits of red vine leaves, their content and composition needs to be evaluated. |
