Rezumat

Nanotubes from layered materials generated significant scientific interest. The driving force for such tubular structures wasattributed to the annihilation of the dangling bonds of the rimatoms. “Misfit” layered compounds (MLCs) are considered to be composite structures having general formula of [(MX)1+x]m[TX2]n, where M is Pb, Sb, rare earths, etc; T is V, Cr,Nb, etc. and X is S, Se.[1]The in-plane (a-b) periodicities of the different layers in the misfit structure are mutually incommensurate along at least one direction.MLCs demonstrate superior thermoelectric behavior and superconductivity. Present talk will be focused on the chemical and physical aspects of the misfit nanotubes. How the combination of two independent stimuli, i.e., the incommensurability of the misfit lattice and the reactivity of the rim atoms, provides a new strategy to synthesize misfit nanotubes will be discussed [2, 3]. Possible properties which might come off in the near future from these materials will be presented.
