The Chronicle of Stephen III the Great is the first chronicle written in Moldova. The original of this chronicle was lost, but its contents can be restored based on internal versions (Anonymous Chronicle, also called improperly Bistrita Chronicle, and Chronicle Putna) and external versions (Moldovan-German Chronicle, Moldovan-Russian and Moldovan-Polish). Analyzing and confronting all these versions, we conclude that there was a common prototype of their described the events in Moldavia since founding the feudal state until the end of the reign of Stephen III the Great. In connection with Slavic chronicles, XV century exegesis focused on three issues: the report of Moldovan chronicles and their processing (German, Russian, Polish); time when they began writing chronicles and the place of writing. |
