The synthesis and investigation of polynuclear iron carboxylate clusters have received considerable attention due their magnetic properties with potential technological application. A new tetranuclear iron(III) cluster [Fe4O2(is)7(dpa)2]NO3 (1) (where His – isobutyric acid, dpa – 2,2′dipyridylamine) has been synthetized and characterized. Two different synthetic routs have been used for the preparation of 1: the reactions of μ3-oxo trinuclear isobutyrate [Fe3O(is)6(H2O)3]NO3 • 2 (MeCN) • 3(H2O) cluster with 2,2′dipyridylamine under microwave heating or ultrasonic irradiation in tetrahydrofuran solution. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that 1 comprises a central {Fe4(μ3-O)2}8+ core (Fig. 1). Seven isobutyric groups additionally bridge four Fe(III) atoms in the cluster cation. Two molecules of dpa chelate to peripheral Fe centers. The distance between inner Fe atoms bridged by two μ3-oxides equals 2.852(8) Å. All iron atoms adopt a distorted octahedral O6 or N2O4 geometry with the Fe–O and Fe–N distances in the range of 1.828(2) - 2.082(2) and 2.147(3) 2.164(4) Å, respectively. The N-Fe-N angles equal 81.96(1) and 83.22(1)°. The IR spectrum of 1 displays strong and broad bands of the coordinated asymmetric and symmetric carboxylate groups at 1577 and 1479 cm–1, respectively. The C-H asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations are observed in the range of 2968–2921 cm–1 and N-H stretching vibrations of dpa at 3436 cm-1.
