At present a constant increase of the slip surfaces number is recorded. The frequency of landslides depends on geology conditions, slopes and soil moisture. The landslides can be triggered by the earthquakes that occur along the border with Romania, and by soil disturbances that lead to compaction, subsidence and rising groundwater, too. The land areas damaged by landslides is 49 thousand ha and the territories with landslide risk makes up about 670 thousand hectares. The most severely affected by landslides regions are: the Moldovan Central Plateau, the Middle Prut Plain, the Dniester Plateau, the Tigheci Plateau. The largest areas of landslides are located in the districts of Calarasi – 3084 ha, Ungheni – 2094, Hincesti – 1364 ha, Straseni – 1115 ha, Telenesti – 1176 ha. Currently, there is a steady increase of the areas damaged by landslides. Thus, in the Criuleni district in 1971 in 1971 52% of villages were affected, and in 1999–78%. In the Orhei district in 1972 it was 45% and 59% in 1999. In the Straseni district in the same period, the figure rose from 85% to 97.5%. Landslide processes are extending over multiple new surfaces. Every 2-3 years about 10 thousand hectares of arable surfaces decades due to the expansion of the landslides affected areas, and 12% of arable lands are considered to be less productive due to landslides and erosion. Large scale landslides that caused the destruction of buildings, constructions, highways, happened in 1912, 1933, 1948, 1967, 1970, 1973, 1985, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003. The analysis landslides manifestation in Moldova for the last 20 years has shown that 85% of them refer to the period from February to May, 4% – for the summer period and 9% – to autumn. According to the Emergency Department, in the last two decades the economic expenses caused by landslides ranged between 27 million MDL (in 2002) and 44 million MDL (in 1998 and 1999). This is 9.7 million MDL on average per year. For example, only as a result of very powerful landslide in Leuseni village, Hincesti district (1998), material damage amounted to about 30 million lei.
