In this study author analyze the political soviet actions towards places of worship in Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. In the spotlight there is the history of Armenian churches from the areas between the Prut and Dniester rivers. Especially the author outlines the fate of the oldest Armenian churches (1804) placed to Chisinau. Thus after the World War II the Armenian churches lost its function as a spiritual unifier of Armenians. They were desecrated being used as storage space, given to other confessions or used as headquarters for a tourism agency. From chronological point of view the study covers the period from the time of the closure of the Armenian churches to the process of returning this place of worship to the Armenian community. In reconstruction of this story the author used the specialized literature, documentary sources placed to the National Archive of Republic of Moldova and Archive of the Monuments Inspection and Restoration Agency for Republic of Moldova, and collective memory of the Armenian community. |
