Doctoral students are an important category of people for modern society. The period of doctoral studies endows PhD students with skills and knowledge to pursue their career in top positions in different areas of human activity. For these reasons, the international trend is to attract the most talented and to increase the number of PhD students. In the Republic of Moldova, starting in 2015, the way of admission to doctoral studies has changed. In this context, in the paper we try to analyze the profile of PhD students admitted to the studies according to the new procedures and to determine the main characteristics of the enrolled doctoral candidate. As informational base, we use the lists of PhD students enrolled in the years 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, which were processed statistically and analytically. The typical PhD student enrolled in these two years is 34.3 years old, is a woman, is a lawyer, studies part time in a doctoral school of the USM, based on a contract, is from the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, there are important differences in the characteristics of PhD students by scientific fieldsa.
