To keep in good condition the 150,000 documents of the library’s collection of documents and more than 300 terabytes of digital material, the British Library use preventive and intervention means in order to minimize the risk of damaging the collections and to maximize their life, for people to be able to use them now and in the future. The Department of Collections Integrity of the British Library is one of the largest departments of this kind, and its purpose is to preserve the intellectual content and the physical form of the various collections that belong to the British Library. It includes such areas as collection storage and preservation, documents and books conservation, applied research in the conservation field, professional training, and digital preservation. The major projects containing significant conservation and storage components include: the storage block for those 262 km of material in Boston Spa, the development of the Newspaper Strategy, and the Program Digital Library and the Centre for Conservation of the British Library. The Centre houses studios for conservation of art and music collections and facilities necessary to develop a comprehensive training program and to provide new services. Three main elements which are in a tight relation form the basis of the Centre for Conservation, and namely: establishment, fund raising and a “change program”. The basics of the setting up are the “floating” sound studios, and the natural northern light which illuminates the conservation studios. |
