The Cult of the Great Goddess among the local population of the Northern Black Sea region. On the basis of a great number of facts the author proves that in the Northern Black Sea region at the Scythian age the cult of the Great Goddess was widely spread. She appeared under various names, including in her Image features of many other female divine beings of Greek and Near East origin: Aphrodite, Gaia, Rhea, Kybele, Astarte. However, in the Northern Black Sea region dominated the Image of a “goddess with snaky feet” – foremother of Scythians. The tradition of sacrificing dogs that was widely spread in the Northern Black Sea region at that time was connected with the cult of the Great Goddess. In the Greek-Scythian art at that time a female image was absolutely dominant so significant was the cult of the Great Goddess for the aborigins of the Northern Black Sea region.
