Rezumat

Breakup of the world socialist system and its climax, collapse of the Soviet Union, cause large-scale geopolitical, macro-economic and ethno-cultural changes in a huge space from the Central Europe to the Central Asia. The former Soviet republics, all except the Baltic, since they had gained independence, did not state European integration as key priority, balancing between the West and Russia. The West had no clear agenda regarding their integration and preferred to support only energetic projects. It was Russia who took advantage of that trend; despite dramatic geopolitical, economic and image losses after the USSR collapse, Moscow succeeded in mobilizing its resources for re-directing them to stop military conflicts in Transnistria, South Ossetia and Abkhazia and to mediate, together with the US and France, the settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh. The post-Soviet trouble-making territories remained suspended due to unwillingness or inability of Russia as of the chief negotiator.
