Rezumat

The Master of Petersburg by J.M. Coetzee is the novel in which the „Master” Dostoyevsky becomes our contemporary and invites us to become co-participants in the investigation of a mysterious murder which took place in Petersburg and whose protagonist is his step-son, Pavel Isaev. The father takes a while to discover his son and at the same time he discovers himself, both personalities ending up defining nihilism in the style of Nietzsche. The narrative style adopted by the South-African writer is a complex one, synthesizing in a postmodern, original manner the styles characteristic of Dostoyevsky, notably the dialogism, and then prominent themes such as parricide, madness, love and death.
