FDSGW-OVK).

Early Iron Age technological innovations: prospects for the study of early grey wheel-made pottery from East Carpathian foot-hill area. The present paper examines early grey wheel-made pottery known as EGWMP-ECR(CCTLR-SCE in Romanian; FDSGW-OVK in German; РГСК-ВПК in Russian). The earliest record of this type of pottery comes from the area studied in the present paper and dates back to the mid VII century B. C. The number of findings of early grey wheel-made pottery from the area under study amounts to 26 (27). The cultural context of findings is also variable: Western Podolian group of Early Scythian culture (EGWMP-ECR,1 – 17 (18-?) sites); Trinca group (EGWMP-ECR,2 – 3 sites); Podolian-Moldavian group (EGWMP-ECR,3 – 1 sites); and Late Hallstatt monuments from Eastern and South-Eastern regions (EGWMP-ECR,4 – 5 sites). The paper presents a preliminary database EGWMP-ECR with extended description of selected monuments and cultural contexts of early wheel-made pottery. A refinement of early dating of pottery (around mid-VII century B. C.) from the area under study is proposed. The basic problems associated with the study EGWMP-ECR and the prospects for further research are discussed. Attention is paid to the salt resources of the East-Carpathian region. An emphasis is made on crucial role of the Eastern Carpathian foot-hill area during Late Hallstatt / early Scythian period (especially in VII. B. C.), as transfer region to the Carpathians and the Balkans. The role of the early Scythians in the trade exchange activities related to salt, as well as their interests and possible control of salt resources of the Eastern Carpathians and north-eastern regions of the Carpathian Basin are also discussed in the paper.
