Moldova became a full-fledged member of the Council of Europe on 13 July 1995. The same day Moldova signed the Statute of the Council of Europe. At present, our country is in full process of implementing reforms that will bring it closer to the European Union. Reference is made here to implementation of the European Union´s Copenhagen criteria which coincide with the Council of Europe fundamental values of observing and promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is emphasised the assistance provided by the Council of Europe and European Union to our country by means of so called Joint Programmes in support of democratic reforms in the Republic of Moldova. A new element of co-operation perspectives between Council of Europe and European Union is the adoption of an Agreement Memorandum between these two organisations, which provides, inter alia, for joint efforts towards combating contemporary defiance of the democratic security on the continent.
