Rezumat

The commencement of the Karabakh conflict in 1988 and the collapse of the USSR in 1991 caused the “re-islamization” in Azerbaijan, i.e. people restarted worshiping their religion. The epoch of Islam’s rebirth began within the country. It was the time when the first Islamic parties and organizations appeared in the country and had tight connections with international radical and terrorist organizations. But they did not play a major role in the society and in the meantime made the Azerbaijanis to be vigilant. Islam raised Azerbaijanis’ interest not only as part of history and culture. At that period, the majority of the Azerbaijanis was Muslims and did not observe most of the religious devotions. Belief in the west was very strong in 1990s and rose as a result of the defeat in the Karabakh conflict and hard social-economic crisis within the country. Belief in the fact that increase of western countries’ role after signing oil contracts will help to return lost lands during the Karabakh war as well as to rapidly change population’s life. However, late in 1990s, disappointment in these values became much stronger; Islam’s influence also kept increasing. Presidential elections of 2003 and parliament elections of 2005 which were conducted with many violations but were recognized and supported by the USA and other European countries stroke a hard blow toward the belief in West and ideas of western democracy in Azerbaijan. After this, the Islamic factor started playing a major role in socialpolitical life of the Azerbaijani society.
