Rezumat

Aziztepe settlement is located at 450-500 m east of Kazakhbeyly village in Kazakh district of Azerbaijan. The rescue excavations in Aziztepe settlement were made in May 2019 by archaeological expedition of Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, led by Prof. Sh. N. Najafov. The archaeological team has researched the area of 100 m length × 20 m breadth, affected by the construction related to the extension of the Ganja-Kazakh-Georgia border road. Based on archaeological artifacts, Aziztepe settlement belonged to Khojaly-Gedebey archaeological culture and dates the end of 2nd (second part) – the beginning of 1st millennium BC). The finds from cultural layer were represented by fragments of ceramic (black and grey colors, polished) and stone wares (grain mills, thimbles). We must emphasize the following: the hill where placed archaeological site is have used along time as agricultural territory and part of upper layer have destroyed in process of farm activity. In excavated area, on 40-50 cm depth, have found five burials. Burials no. 1 and no. 4 are cenotaphs (or destroyed graves), but burial no. 2 (probably male, about 40 years old), burial no. 3 (probably male, about 30-35 years old) and burial no. 5 (male, 40-50 years old) they contained human skeletal remains. Cenotaphtype burials were quite widespread in the Khojaly-Gedebey culture. The human bones discovered in grave no. 5 were in chaotic position. The male skull from burial no. 5 is ultradolichocranic, Mediterranean race, perhaps belonged to Caspian anthropological type. In area of scapula found iron javelin tip. Probably, man killed by javelin in military conflict and buried after fight. The finds from burials were ceramic vessels (black and grey colors, polished), paste beads, agate beads, bronze arrowheads (the South Caucasian type), bone head, iron javelin head, iron knives. All artifacts have their analogies in settlements and burial monuments of KhojalyGedebey archaeological culture. Fig. 1. Artifacts from Aziztepe (Azerbaijan)
