Rezumat

When talking about Georgian cinema of the 80s, the historical context acquires special significance, which largely determined the character and theme of the Georgian films of that time. The 80s are the last decade of the existence of the Soviet Union, during which the developed processes slowly and purposefully led the country to collapse. The long-accumulated economic problems and processes of national self-determination that had developed in almost every republic no longer allowed for the inevitable end to be postponed. Of course, Georgian cinema could not stay behind these events, it can be said that the films made by Georgian directors in the first half of the 80s, in a way “predicted” the processes that later developed in the Soviet Union or in Georgia. Tengiz Abuladze’s film “Repentance” became a kind of flagship of the “Perestroika” era. This film was the first to bring to light the previously taboo themes about terror and repression in the Soviet Union, but even in the Georgian cinema, before “Repentance”, there were films that analyzed the historical past and to some extent predicted the future. In 1981, director Irakli Kvirikadze took a very interesting picture of “Ihe Swimmer”. This film, which is a mixture of irony, farce and tragedy, tells the story of three generations of one family in three different eras, and against the background of their adventure, specific time trends and problems are read. Kvirikadze’s film had a rather difficult fate, the State Film Committee was dissatisfied with the content of the film and issued a decision to deprive Irakli Kvirikadze of the title of director, and to destroy the film itself. In 1984, two films were released - a prophecy of Giorgi Shengelaia “The Journey of a Young Composer” and Eldar Shengelaia “Blue Mountains, or an Unbelievable Story”. In the first the pre-storm calmness and the painful anticipation of change are felt, while in the second the system itself is metaphorically destroyed.
