Rezumat

Reading the Bessarabian newspapers, which were published in Russian, Romanian and Yiddish from the 1850s to the 1930s, one can learn about the interesting life of the Jewish people in Bessarabia. This may serve as additional information for any genealogical research. Literally, on every page, there is information related to the Bessarabian Jews. For example, according to the newspaper “Bessarabskie Regional Vedomosti” of 1958, we learn about the use of medicines from the fund of the deceased pharmacist Shuster in the Kishinev Jewish Hospital since 1833, about the trials of the heirs of the Bendery tradesman Leiba Barbalat, etc. The “Bessarabian Provincial Gazette” of 1884 published the list of bourgeois Jews of military age in the city of Chisinau, who were to do the military service. In 1916, the newspaper “The Voice of Chisinau” wrote about the famous Gorishtein Theater, in which a Jewish troupe led by N. Spivakovsky gave tours. The newspaper “Bessarabskoye Slovo” wrote how in the ‘20s the famous Sevila Pastor toured with the classical operetta “Tsipke Fire”, as well as the Jewish singer Anna Gelber, the famous actor Misha Fishzon with his numerous performances, as well as the lecturer Efroim Davidzon, who visited Izmail, Tarutino, Artsyz and delivered lectures on universal and Jewish humor, on how “The Joint” allocated $13,000 to Bessarabia for the needs of Jewish hospitals and orphanages. The newspaper wrote how in the ‘30s the Jewish theater came to Bessarabia with a wonderful production of “Kiddush Hashem” directed by Stein about the primitive life of Jews in the 17th century, along with the “Liberty Theater” from New York with Dora Weissman, the talented author of productions A. Shor, and the director of the Jewish theater in New York Maurice Schwartz. Also, from the newspapers of the ‘30s, it becomes known about a wonderful ball organized by the Jewish society “Bikur-Khoylim” in Balti. A children’s beauty contest was also held there with the participation of Jewish girls. Photographs were published in newspapers, as well as many other interesting events from the Jewish life of Bessarabia. Thus, various newspapers covered in detail both daily and interesting events from the life of the Jewish population in Bessarabia.
