Rezumat

During the time of his scientific activity, Professor Alexandru Lungu (State University of Tiraspol based in Chişinău) left an invaluable legacy of palaeontological specimens that were mostly gathered from Neogene fossiliferous sites from the territory of the Republic of Moldova. These specimens are housed in the collections of the State University of Tiraspol based in Chişinău, the Geological-Palaeontological Museum from the „T.G. Şevcenko” Dniester State University of Tiraspol, the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History of Moldova (Chişinău) and the Institute of Zoology from the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The assessment (inventorying, coding, preparing and classification) of these collections was initiated in the past few years and requires a detailed revision of numerous groups of mega- and micro-mammals, birds, reptiles, mollusks, coprolites, and rock samples. Some specimens are represented by holotypes of species that are new to science. A high interest for these collections was, and still is expressed by international specialists that in the last years visited Republic of Moldova from various scientific centers: Ukraine, Romania, Russia, U.S.A., Greece, Germany, Holland, and France. Another impressive scientific value holds the collection of books, papers and manuscripts hosted by the Chair of General Physical Geography from the State University of Tiraspol based in Chişinău.
