Considerations concerning current situation of infrastructure in small and medium cities of the Republic of Moldova. The infrastructure of small urban settlements in the Republic of Moldova was formed during the Post-war period, being in a direct dependence of industrial enterprises and local farming which ensured the maintenance of common engineering systems for enterprises and housing, but also medical and social institutions. Along with the stagnation or reorganization of these companies, practically ceased and functioning of the infrastructure affecting the entire community. During the transition period the infrastructure as a whole has experienced significant changes, and small urban settlements remained unsatisfactory so far. In particular, has remained strongly affected technical infrastructure (paths of communication, engineering systems), social and cultural objectives, etc. Their use currently requires high cost both for use and renovation. For these reasons it is necessary to pay special attention to infrastructure development in small and medium urban settlements, because it is the most important factor for stimulation and economic development; the investment attractiveness and urban competitiveness. In this respect it is necessary the development of sectoral infrastructure strategies that would change the cities’ image and their role in development of rural communities.
