Spatial and temporal evolution of the forest landscape in the last 100 years in Giurgeu Depression (Eastern Carpathians-Romania). The spatial and temporal evolution of forest landscape in the hearth of Giurgeu Basin (Harghita County) had in the last 100 years two major historical balances which resulted in a drastic decrease of the forest area. These may be related to the demographic evolution of the region, when some clearings were made in order to gain agricultural land (pasture and hay) and especially to anthropogenic evolutionary events of industrialization, respectively the construction of the railway in Mureş Valley and the high demand for wood in industry, construction and domestic use. Finally it is worth reiterating the communist period after World War II, when Romania had to pay huge war reparations to the Soviet Union and the mixed SovietRomanian company "Sovromlemn" sapped the country's forests, including those in Giurgeu Basin. The analyzed issues are visible both at macro-territorial and micro-territorial level and each communal or municipal administrative unit suffers from the effects of current human pressure on the forest landscape.
