Background. The methods of teaching/learning foreign languages in a medical context are currently aimed at the development of authentic learning activities, arising from common topics of social interest, research issues or mass media sources. Objective of the study. To carry out a literature review and a descriptive analysis of the teaching techniques and methods of active learning pedagogy. Material and Methods. The research focused on the analysis of motivational factors, namely, the teacher, teaching activities, assessments, social and institutional activities, as well as their inclusion in the process of setting learning and teaching objectives, identification of learning contents, and designing learning activities. Results. The literature review allowed the identification of the main teaching methods: project (collaborative learning), simulation (model-based information reproduction) and case study (real world problems). These methods allow the students to get actively involved in the learning process, to gain competencies by comprehending the specialized information in the foreign language. Therefore, the student is encouraged to do individual work, to engage in collaborative activities and to have an active involvement in the learning process. Conclusion. Based on three main factors, namely, the teacher`s role, the communication and the learning activities, the principles of active learning can be easily adjusted in the teaching of foreign languages for specific purposes and medical terminology.
