Background. Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a common accident in the pediatric population. Any suspicion requires mandatory bronchoscopy, both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, in order to remove it. Objective of the study. Evaluation of clinical and imaging manifestations and bronchoscopic features of FBA in children. Material and Methods. We present a descriptive study, which includes 156 children, who supported a rigid bronchoscopy for extraction of the foreign body, being hospitalized and evaluated in the Pneumology Clinic, during 2011-2020. Microsoft Excel and SPSS were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Results. In the study group, the most affected age group was 1-3 years, which constituted 77.6% (IC 70.2% -83.8%). The most common symptoms were cough - 98.7% (IC 95.4% -99.8%), dyspnea - 94.2% (IC 89.3%-97.3%), wheezing - 61, 5% (IC 53.4%-69.2%). Chest radiography was relevant for FBA in 55.8% of cases (IC 47.6%-63.7%). The foreign body was extracted from the right bronchus in 32.1%, from the left bronchus in 21.8% of cases, from the lobar/segmental bronchus - 22.5%, and in 21.2% - multiple locations. In 94.87% of children, FB was extracted at the first bronchoscopy, and in 14.74% of cases, in the endoscopic reassessment, remaining fragments were extracted. Conclusion. Cough, dyspnea and wheezing are suggestive of this pediatric emergency. Chest radiography provides diagnostic information only for every second child. Bronchoscopy has proven to be an effective and safe method in the medical conduct of cases of FBA in children. |
