Background. Acute abdominal pain represents 10% of the addresses in the Emergency Department (ED). The acute abdomen (AA) approach according to the algorithms proposed by the National/Institutional Clinical Protocols (CP) prevents the development of complications and the patient's death. Objective of the study. Evaluation of the approach of the patient with AA in ED of Institute of Emergency Medicine (IEM) and the compliance with the National/Institutional/International CP algorithm. Material and Methods. A retrospective study included the evaluation of 1457 medical records of patients with a presumptive diagnosis of AA in ED of IEM. The statistical evaluation of the selected data was performed through the Excel program. Results. Out of 1457 evaluated medical records, with the presumptive diagnosis of AA, 346 cases were identified-acute appendicitis (AAp), 352-acute pancreatitis (AP), 306-acute cholecystitis(AC), 167-strangled hernia(SH), 165- intestinal occlusion(IO), 14-perforated ulcer (PU), 107-acute gynecologic abdomen(AGA). AAp was confirmed in 183 cases, 97% were treated surgically. AP were confirmed 148 cases, in 99.3% were treated conservative. AC was confirmed in 178 patients, 85.96% were treated surgically. SH was confirmed in 132 patients, 93% were treated surgically. IO was confirmed in 153 patients, in 38%-surgery was required. PU was confirmed by 10 patients. AGA was confirmed in 107 cases. Conclusion. The management of patients with AA in ED of IEM, correspond to the analyzed national/institutional CP. In the case of AP, in 37.5% of cases, the severity of pancreatitis according to the 2012 Revised Atlanta classification was not mentioned. |
