Background. Osteoarthritis of the knees affects 1/6 of the global adult population. The patient's presence of overweight or obesity of diverse grade has a negative impact, alters the evolution of the disease, speeds up structural damage to the knees and influences the quality of life. Objective of the study. The bibliographic study of literature on the impact of obesity on osteoarthritis of knees. Material and Methods. Through the databases PubMed, NCBI, MeSH Hinari and SpringerLink, and others, 50 scientific publications were selected on the subject by the keywords: overweight, obesity, osteoarthritis of the knees. Results. Analysis of published scientific sources indicates that overweight and obesity patients are prone to a more unfavorable evolution of knee osteoarthritis. A body mass index (BMI)> 25 is associated with an increase in the frequency of knees articulations; People with a BMI> 27,5 present not only clinical symptoms, but also specific changes to the MRI imaging exam. In Grade II obesity (BMI> 35) clinical symptoms - pain in knees joints was felt quite intense (after WOMAC), articular instability, periodically signs of local inflammation with hyperemia, hyperthermia, synovitis were present, which required differentiation with other inflammatory arthropathies and an association of gonarthrosis. Conclusion. Overweight people, those with obesity of various degree present an increased risk to develop osteoarthritis of various joints, but primarily of knee joints. Exposure to chronic physical stress, female gender, adult age, increases the risk of severe gonarthrosis. |
