Background. Nutrition is an important determinant of health, physical and cognitive function, vitality, quality of life and longevity. Cognitive fragility is a new concept introduced in geriatrics and is a general term for the cognitive deficit present in the elderly. Objective of the study. The purpose was to determine correlations of psycho-cognitive functions with malnutrition in the elderly. Material and Methods. The observational study included 50 institutionalized patients (77.72 ± 1.08 years). Questionnaires were used to collect data on cognitive function tools (MMSE), emotional status (Hamilton Scale) and nutritional status (MNA). The obtained results were analyzed by descriptive, correlational methods, Soft State Statistics 7. Results. The mean value of the MNA score in the elderly in the study was 21.5 ± 0.91 points, 38% of people were with normal nutritional status, 30% - at risk of malnutrition and 32% of elderly people with malnutrition. Data on the evaluation of psycho-cognitive factors determined the depressive syndrome in 54% of elderly people, evaluated by the Hamilton scale whose mean value was 7.34 ± 0.81 points. Cognitive disorders were established in 58% of elderly, assessed by MMSE score, with a mean score value of 21.98 ± 0.67 points. At the same time, the interrelation of psycho-cognitive disorders (r = 0.30; p <0.05) and malnutrition (r = 0.36; p <0.05) determined with the decrease of the autonomy Conclusion. The results of this study revealed a high frequency of psycho-cognitive disorders in institutionalized elderly, 54% and 58% of cases, respectively. |
