Background. Frailty is a syndrome characterized by state of increased vulnerability to endogenous and exogenous stressors, due to declines in physiologic reserve and function and is found in 15–74% of patients with heart failure (HF). The assessment of frailty is crucial, associated with unfavorable outcomes. Objective of the study. To assess frailty in patients with heart failure due by valvular heart disease. Material and Methods. Were performed prospective, observational study of 22 heart failure patients with valvular heart disease admitted to the Cardiac Malformation Department, Institute of Cardiology. Edmonton Frailty Scale was used to assess frailty. Descriptive statistics of the variables were calculated using the EXEL software program. Results. The mean age of the study group was 63.2 ± 0,04(50–76) years, female- 10(45.4%), male-12(54.5%) patients. Frailty was identified in 63.6%. Of the frail population 71.4% was frail on all four domains, 28.5% - on two and three domains. Physical domain was frail in 71.4%, cognitive – 28.5%, psychological -71.4 % and 57.1% of patients were social frail. Women were more frequently social frail-42.8% whereas men - physically and psychologically frail-57.1% and 42.8% respectively. Cognitive frail was distributed equal, independent by gender in 14.2%. General health status was appreciated frail by 85.7% of responders. Conclusion. Frailty is common in heart failure being estimated in 63.6% patients with valvular heart disease. The greatest rate was observed for physical and psychological frailty in men and for social frailty in women |
