Background. Human health is affected both directly and indirectly by climate change. People are exposed by changing weather patterns (for example, more intense and frequent extreme weather conditions). Objective of the study. Highlight the direct and indirect effects on human health conditioned by climate change. Material and Methods. Type of study: descriptive-analytical. The literature available in the PubMed library over the past two years has been reviewed. The total number of articles was 143, of which 9 were selected. Results. The direct effects are manifested by the increase of morbidity and mortality, the increase in the number of requests to emergency medical assistance. The indirect consequences are an increase in the number of carriers of infections, such as mosquitoes that swarm near flooded areas and spread disease; increase in the population of ticks, when temperatures rise, they contribute to the development of encephalitis, Lyme disease; changes in water quality, air, food quality and quantity, ecosystems, agriculture and the economy. Lack of good quality drinking water, floods pose a risk of spreading water infections. Conclusion. The consequences of exposure to extreme or prolonged weather events can be acute (which can act through mechanisms similar to those of traumatic stress) or delayed (which include disorders such as post-traumatic stress or can even be passed on to later generations). |
