Background. The Patient Safety Culture should become a priority in order to improve the quality of medical care, patient satisfaction and avoid adverse reactions associated with medical care. For this, it is important to know the strengths and weaknesses of the entire process of providing neurosurgical care. Objective of the study. To study the Patient Safety Culture (PSC) among the staff in the neurosurgical departments from Republic of Moldova and to classify the results according the Harrington Scale; To identify the strengths and the gaps of patient safety culture. Material and Methods. A cross sectional study was conducted in neurosurgical departments from Moldova using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC), Romanian version. There was voluntary involved in the survey 345 doctors, residents and nurses. Descriptive statistics were carried out, frequency of positive responses (PPR) was analyzed overall and classified according Harrington scale. Results. The level of PSC was 60.8±0.9% - the "medium level" according Harrington scale. Three dimensions of PSC achieved the highest score of PPR: teamwork within units-85.0%, organizational learning- continuous improvement- 81.1%, supervisor manager expectations and actions promoting patient safety- 80.9%. One dimension- "High level"- feedback and communication about error- 76.5%. Eight dimensions- "Medium level"- handoffs and transitions- 61.9%, frequency of events reported- 60.0%, management support for patient safety- 59.2%, teamwork between units- 52.2%, communication openness- 47.5%, overall perception on patient safety-44.3%, non-punitive responses to errors-43.2 %, staffing-37.3%. The study was revealed the existence of 6 gaps of PSC which need to be improved. Conclusion. The results of survey show the weaknesses of patient safety culture that require the prompt interventions of the management and staff from neurosurgical departments from Moldova |
