In Halychyna (Galicia) almost until the end of the XIX century, the manufacturing of garment and textiles developed mainly in two directions. The first one was the traditional (peasant) manufacturing, where the local folk tradition dominated. And the second one – the garment form, fabrics, their décor matched to the fashion trends of the certain time. This direction was typical for the upper strata of society, wealthy representatives of the city. For this direction, in the most cases, garment and fabrics were imported, while local production took up only a small part. One of the causes was the lack of professional staff for textile manufacturing. It should be noted that urban women were intensively engaged in needlework: they embroidered, weaved lace, knitted “at their leisure”, made clothes and textiles for personal use, as well as jewelry, often using patterns from European fashion magazines. However, for a long time, female works were not properly appreciated. And only in the last third of the XIX century, under the influence of Western trends, an understanding of the importance of the female role in society was coming, as well as an awareness of their active role in the development of needlework, handicrafts and artistic and professional education in the region. Some of the first who began to popularize female needlework and its prospects at the end of the XIX century were private individuals or partnerships, which consisted mainly of representatives of aristocratic circles, the intelligentsia. They opened specialized schools, taught courses, started their own business, thus attracting women of different social classes to an active social and cultural life, giving them the opportunity for self-realization. These processes developed much faster abroad, that is why they became a clear example for the opening of corresponding schools in Halychyna (Galicia). The study of training programs during trips abroad, as well as areas of study, item assortment was subsequently embodied in local schools. This positively influenced the opening of specialized schools in Halychyna (Galicia), the activities of which at the end of the XIX – first third of the XX centuries became famous even abroad. Artistic and professional female education became an important stage in the development of the craft of Halychyna (Galicia) at the end of the XIX – the first third of the XX centuries. |
