Rezumat

The artist Ivan Kovsharov (1799–1861), the contemporary if the great Karl Briullov, made a valuable contribution to the decorative design of temples and palaces of Novorossia, Bessarabia and Moldova. He received education in the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts. The contemporaries of Ivan Kovsharov admired his mastery in painting of flowers and garlands, wall-painting of house interiors, creation of magnificent iconostases, icons and gilt frames. He educated a formidable group of his followers – the decorative art artists. Unfortunate, the name of this artist is nowadays practically forgotten. Amongst the reasons of such a situation is the struggle against religion and destruction of lost of churches and cathedrals in the 20th–30th of the 20th century. The restoration of the Orthodox Churches of the Northern Black Sea coast and the prospective of restoration of the Odessa’s M. S. Vorontsov Palace make the study of Ivan Kovsharov’s creative heritage very actual. His son Anatoliy Ivanovich Kovsharov (1848–1927) became a well-known architect.
