This paper presents the process of research, conservation and restoration of the icon „Coronation of the Virgin” which belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Iasi. In the last four decades, the icon has been kept in the church deposit of the Archdiocese of Iași, its origin not being known. The icon was dark due to dirt, oxidation of the varnish and repainting over time, which made the original painting almost invisible. Another major problem with the icon was the detachment of the different layers of the painting. Due to these detachments, in time, gaps in the pictorial layer were formed, which led to the fragmentation of the image. The typology of degradations was highlighted with the help of VIS, UV, Roentgen radiation, photos taken in direct tangential light, macrophotographs. The problems of preserving the icon were solved by interventions to strengthen the painting layer and the wooden support, removing dirt deposits from the piece, disinfecting the wood. The treatments of cleaning the painting, removing repaintings, thinning and making the oxidized varnish even, played an essential role in bringing the original painting back to light. The completion of the lacunar areas of the pictorial layer contributed to the restoration of the painting unity and the highlighting of the icon.
