Rezumat

The starting point of the pre-Easter spring rituals of the Ukrainians in the Republic of Moldova is considered to be the celebration of the Candlemas – Стрітення. In the Christian tradition, this is one of the most revered twelve church holidays, symbolizing the meeting of humanity with its Savior, and according to pre-Christian ideas, on this day, Winter meets Spring / Summer. Until now, many Ukrainians adhere to bans on certain types of work on this day. The ritual actions of the holiday are associated with the cleansing cults of water and fire: in the church, candles and water are blessed, believing that they acquire magical and healing properties. People’s omens and fortune-telling are permeated with agrarian motives. Maslenitsa holiday – Заговіня, Сиропуст, Пущеня, Масляна, Масленица – was not celebrated so widely. The main dishes were not pancakes, but dumplings, pies (вареники, пироги, паланиці), as well as dishes made from milk and lactic acid products. In the south of the republic, during the Maslenitsa week, the archaic ritual «Колодка» / «Колодій» was performed, initiating marriage. Its ritual elements, accompanied by folk festivities, were preserved until the 60s XX century. The holidays of Явдохи, Сорок святих, Теплого Олекси are distinguished by characteristic rituals and signs. Deeply religious Orthodox Ukrainians perceive Great Lent as a time of repentance and cleansing. Annunciation – Благовіщення in the national calendar is associated with the awakening of nature, children’s games, ritual pastries, girlish songs-round dances (весня́нки / гаї́вки) with their imitation and initial magic, youthful fun. On Palm Sunday – Вербна / Шуткова неділя – willow branches are consecrated, which, acquiring magical properties, are used in various rituals. Every day of Holy Week (Страсни́й ти́ждень), especially Страсний Четвер, Страсна П’ятниця and Страсна Субота, are filled with corresponding symbols, restrictions, traditions and rituals. The field materials collected by us testified to the presence in the pre-Easter ceremonial sphere of the Ukrainians of the Republic of Moldova not only Christian, but also many pre-Christian beliefs also at the beginning of the XXI century.
