Archimandrite architect Ioannicius (1777–1851). This article is devoted to Bessarabian talented architect, Archimandrite Ioannicius (1777– 1851), who in 1813 has designed the buildings of Kishinev Metropolitan see and seminary. Born in Chernigov province at the merchant’s family he became John with such secular name. Still, 1798 he was taken the monastic vows in the Moldavan Neamts monastery. The Metropolitan of Kishinev and Khotin Gabriel Banulescu Bodoni first, had called Ioannicius from St. Petersburg to Jassy, and then in Kishinev the Crusade hierodeacon was appointed as a teacher of drawing and arithmetic. Also he made engraving and printing of religious literature. In 1822 Ioannicius was promoted to the rank of Archimandrite. The first he became the father superior of Ghorodishte monastery and some later Gherbovets one. As an architect Ioannicius has projected and overseen “the faithfulness of all construction works”. And he took part in the building stone churches in Kipriany and Gherbovets monasteries. It was known, that Archimandrite Ioannicius had been spent as an abbot in Gherbovets monastery during 23 years last old of his life. He passed away in1851 and was buried behind the altar of the Assumption church of that monastery, leaving enough bright trace in the Bessarabian history for the first half of XIX century. |
