Background. Specialized language is the lexicon used in specialized communication. Medical terminology is characterized by specific features of specialized and common language. Medical terminology is determined by some defining characteristics: complexity, autonomy, accuracy and lack of ambiguity of terms. Objective of the study. The aim of the paper was to analyze English medical terms and to identify the contextual semantic valences of medical terms. Material and Methods. The comparative analysis of the semantic valences of English medical terms was performed based on the British medical journal The Lancet. The medical lexicon was analyzed relying on some criteria: primary meaning, terminological meaning, monosemy, restriction of semantic evolution, extension of terminological meaning, polysemy, contextual semantic flexibility. Results. From the perspective of the lexico-semantic paradigm, the common language, by extension, acquired new semantic valences, depending on the medical context. The assignment of new semantic valences to terms, in various medical contexts, was identified. Most of the analyzed terms were subjected to the lexico-semantic transformation, through the process of semantic extension and amplification of the terminological meaning. This phenomenon was conditioned by the evolution of medicine and scientific progress. The semantics of medical terminology evolved gradually, shaping the connotative meaning of medical terms. Conclusion. English medical terminology has various semantic valences, depending on the medical context. The primary meaning of some medical terms underwent a semantic evolution determined by the correlation of socio-linguistic factors, assigning additional semantic valences to medical terms. |
