Background. Educational activities have a decisive role in ensuring the oral health of children and must aim at adopting dento-sanogenic behaviors, carried out periodically and from an early age, initiated and maintained in the family; parents, being the first models of behavior for children. Objective of the study. Evaluation of parents knowledge, attitudes and oral health practices in preschool children in inducing dento-sanogenic behaviors and developing recommendations for creating and maintaining dento-sanogenic practices in children. Material and Methods. A quantitative, selective descriptive study was performed. The study was conducted on a group of 410 parents from the Republic of Moldova. The study focused on the segment of parents who have children aged between 3 and 6 years from the two areas of residence: urban and rural, being applied a standardized questionnaire, developed by WHO, supplemented with additional questions from the author. Results. Parents in urban areas (45%) know twice as better those in rural areas (22%) that brushing starts with the eruption of the first temporary tooth. Only half of parents (48%) know that a preschooler is recommended to brush their teeth at least twice a day and 11% of parents believe that their children do not need to brush their teeth, considering that they are changing anyway. Almost half of parents (40%) do not know the correct technique of brushing their teeth. Only 11% of mothers were an example for their child in learning dento-sanogenic habits and about a quarter of parents are not involved in any way in learning dental hygiene of their children. Conclusion. The formation and maintenance of hygienic-dental practices and pursuing interest and motivation for oral health begins in the family and the main role goes directly to parents, but they do not have enough knowledge about children's oral health and do not show sufficient involvement. |
