Background. It has been established that components of the renin-angiotensin system are present in ocular structures and may play an important role in regulating ocular physiological processes and the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, uveitis and cataracts. Objective of the study. The peculiarities of the influence of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers on the parameters of the ocular renin-angiotensin system were specified. Material and Methods. The articles from the PubMed database were selected and analyzed according to the keywords “renin-angiotensin system”, “glaucoma”, “angiotensin-converting enzyme”. Results. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers have been shown to have beneficial effects in diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration by reducing proliferative, inflammatory, oxidative and angiogenic processes. The researched groups have been shown to be effective in lowering intraocular pressure by decreasing the formation of aqueous humor, increasing uveoscleral flow, activating the angiotensin 2 conversion enzyme, and reducing the MAS receptor signaling pathway. Conclusion. The renin-angiotensin system, involved in various inflammatory, degenerative and ischemic eye disorders, has been shown to be essential in the pathogenetic links of ophthalmic diseases. Elucidating the role of the components of this system in the physiological and pathological regulation have opened a new therapeutic approach for the attenuation of ocular disorders by angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers. |
