A sign often leads to a symbol. In this way, a symbol is a sign which refers to the object it denotes, a general association of ideas, which causes the fact that the symbol is interpreted as a reference to the object. The linguistic sign has also a great advantage on the symbol - its immense versatility. A necessary knowledge is asked for in order to discover the hidden meaning of the sign which can become a symbol, thus they can be confused. The sign-symbol represents a dilemma among linguists. Sometimes a single sign can create a single symbol; also a sign can sometimes create more symbols. It seems that the symbol could be obsolete, always fills a different function from that of the sign, the last one appears more useful, efficient and convenient, by its reasoning and precise, which opposes the irreducible ambiguity of the symbol. |
